WAS IST SOCA?
Soca ist eine moderne, schnellere Form von Calypso.Die weit verbreitete Meinung, Soca sei ein Mix aus
amerikanischer Soul Music und traditionellem Calypso("So - Ca" = Soul - Calypso), klingt zwar plausibel,
ist aber in wirklichkeit falsch. Soca enstand durch die Fusion von Calypso und indischen Rhytmen, die
Kombination der musikalischen Traditionen der beiden grössten ethnischen Gruppen Trinidad und Tobagos.
DER VATER DES SOCA
Geboren am 6.Oktober 1941 in Lengua, Trinidad, wird Garfield Blackman als Erschaffer von Soca an-
gesehen. Mit der Veröffentlichung der Single "Clock & Dagger", wird Blackman 1963 unter dem Namen
Lord Shorty bekannt. Gerede, dass Calypso aussterbe und Reggae jetzt der neue Sound sei, veranlasste
Lord Shorty dazu mit dem Calypso Rhytmus zu experimentieren. Er kombinierte indische Rhytmen und
Instrumente (vorwiegend Dholak, Tabla und Dhantal) mittraditionellem Calypso. Das Ergebnis war ein
energetischer musikalischer Hybrid, genannt Soca.
1973 stellte Lord Shorty der Welt seinen neuen Sound mit seiner Hit-Single "Indrani" vor.
Die Veröffentlichung des Albums "Endless Vibrations" 1974, brachte dutzende Musiker dazu, diesen neuen
"Soca-Style" zu übernehmen. Lord Shorty bezeichnete seinen musikalischen Hybrid anfänglich als "Solca"
was er von "Soul of Calypso" ableitete. Die Indianisierung des Calypso brachte die musikalischen Traditionen
der beiden Haupt-Bevölkerungsgruppen, den Nachfahren der afrikanischen Sklaven und den indischen
Vertragsarbeitern zusammen. Der Name wurde erst später von einem Musikjournalisten in "Soca" geändert.
Soca wuchs und entwickelte sich weiter, vermischte sich mit Reggae/Dancehall, Salsa, RnB, Chutney u.s.w....
Am 12. Juli 2000 Starb Lord Shorty. Sein grossartiges Vermächtnis, der Soca-Rhytmus den er kreierte,
beförderte Calypso in eine neue Ära.
Der ansteckende Rhytmus machte Calypso auch für die jüngere Generation zugänglich.

LIGHTNIN & THUNDA BIOGRAFIE:
Lightnin & Thunda wurde im Frühjahr 2003 als erstes und reines Soca & Calypso Soundsystem der Schweiz, von den Mitgliedern TBR (Selector) und MISTAH DIRECT (Booking & Managment) aus der Taufe gehoben. Beide waren schon seit mehreren Jahren vom Soca Fever befallen.
Als ehemalige Roots Operator DJs (Zürichs Reggae Pionier,aktiv seit 1977) und Mitglieder div. Soundcrews im Bereich Dancehall und Reggae, war der Sprung zu einem eigenen Soca Soundsystem nicht weit.
Nach den ersten Abstechern nach T&T , Grenada und St. Lucia aber auch dem regelmässigem Besuch des Londoner Notting Hill Carneval wurde dieser Wunsch dann Wirklichkeit.
Mitte 2004 wurde mit DJ Twista ein zweiter, begeisterter Soca Selector ins Boot geholt.
Durch Auftritte in div. Clubs (Toni Molki ZH, Palais X-tra ZH, Kraftfeld ZH, K.U.G.L. SG, Hafenklang
Hamburg DE, usw...), am Long Street Carneval 2003 sowie am Züri Fescht 2004, sicherten sich
Lightnin & Thunda den Platz der ersten, offiziellen Soca Crew der Schweiz.
Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere war u.a. die Aftershowparty des Schweizer Kevin Lyttle Konzertes.
